About the MedHome Portal

The MedHome Portal:

...is a web-based information access resource with annotated references. www.medhomeportal.org

For and about Families:

This section is developed by families, for families and includes an explanation of the MedHome portal and how to use it for the lay person; annotated lists of contacts, support groups, and other community resources are available.

Education and Legal Issues:

When a child’s brain is injured, it does not heal like a broken bone, torn muscle or skin. Unlike broken bones that mend, or cut or scraped skin that grows again, the brain cannot repair itself. It cannot grow new brain cells, called neurons, once they are damaged.

Why a child’s brain needs protection

Working with the state Office of Education, explanations and details about school policies and resources for children with special health care needs, along with contact information for key personnel in each school, maps, and relevant forms are offered. We detail laws and regulations, both Federal and State, that impact the rights of children with special health care needs and the services available to them, including Titles V, XIX, and XXI of the Social Security Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, along with a brief summary of each, relevant language from the laws, and examples of how they impact children and families. We also provide a list of resources related to education and assistance of families with legal issues.

Diagnosis and Conditions:

For each of a growing number of diagnoses, a Diagnosis Module offers ready access to reliable, relevant, and useful information, tools, and resources. The Diagnosis Prevalence List provides prevalence figures for a number of chronic conditions in children.
